England slight favourite due to its current form: Sunil Gavaskar

The last time India played England in a semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium, Graham Gooch swept his way to a magnificent century, and England ended defending champions India’s dream of contesting a final at home. That was, of course, a One-Day International of 50 overs.

This time, the defending champions play England in a semifinal, albeit in a T20 World Cup. In the previous two semifinals of the T20 World Cup, these teams clashed with mixed results. England won by a thumping margin of 10 wickets in Australia in 2022, and India beat England comfortably in the West Indies in 2024.

England have belief and skills to take down India, says Brook

England are drawing confidence from a run of tight victories ahead of their Twenty20 ‌World Cup semi-final against India, captain Harry Brook said, adding that his team’s resilience would be a key factor at the Wankhede Stadium.

England’s route to the last four has not all been smooth sailing, with the two-time champions advancing after wins over Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand, ‌against whom they needed 43 runs off the final 18 balls to get over the line.

“We’ve won tight games, which in World ‌Cups prove to be very important, and we’ve got a lot of ‌confidence going into the deeper parts of the game,” Brook told reporters yesterday.

“We’ve won games, which we probably shouldn’t have won, and it just feels like we’ve never really been out of any game so far, which holds you in good stead in these world competitions.

Brook’s own form ‌has underpinned that message. The 27-year-old struck a 50-ball hundred to lift England past Pakistan in Pallekele.

“I don’t believe that we need a perfect game to win the competition. The games that we have won have been ‌nowhere near perfect, and we still managed to get the wins convincingly in some of them, and then tight in the other games,” Brook said.

History-chasing India, England on collision course at iconic Wankhede

It’s a stadium steeped in tradition, but it hasn’t shied away from sprucing itself up without disassociating itself from the past. The Wankhede Stadium has changed character in the 51 years of its existence, but it hasn’t lost any of its character.

Almost immediately after entering the premises through the Vinoo Mankad Gate, one is greeted by a statue of the original don of Indian batting, Sunil Gavaskar, his bat raised, captured mid-stride, a tribute to how the great man brought up his 10,000th Test run, against Pakistan in Ahmedabad in March 1987, with a dab past short third-man off off-spinner Ijaz Fakih.
