President’s visit, function

It is most unfortunate that the Prime Minister, in what are obviously election speeches, has harped on the alleged lack of proper arrangements by the West Bengal government for the International Santal Conference, following President Droupadi Murmu’s expression of disappointment (Front page, “Centre seeks report from Bengal on President’s visit”, March 9). This raises the question of whether the West Bengal Chief Minister and the government had sufficient advance notice of the President’s visit. At the same time, given the sudden changes involving Governors in certain States, one may ask whether there has been a breach of protocol when it came to informing or consulting the Chief Ministers about these changes. In a rapidly eroding federal structure, such instances highlight the growing fissures between the Centre and the States.

The defence by the West Bengal government seems odd. Given the significance of the President’s office, such developments merit careful reflection and a clarification of the circumstances surrounding the arrangements.

LPG pricing

The hike in LPG prices is painful for ordinary households, but the wider picture cannot be ignored. West Asia tensions have disrupted supply chains, and India depends on imports for most of its LPG needs. The price revision, though unwelcome, appears modest relative to the scale of global disruption. Crucially, domestic supply remains stable and uninterrupted.

India’s resounding triumph in the T20 World Cup is more than a sporting victory. It is a reminder of what collective discipline, quiet confidence and fearless talent can achieve. Victories like this also underline the depth of India’s cricketing ecosystem.
