Wealthy nations pledge record release of emergency oil reserves

A group representing many of the world’s wealthiest countries agreed on Wednesday (March 12, 2026) to release the largest volume of emergency oil reserves in its history, in a bid to counter the effects of the Iran war on energy markets and the halt of cargo shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency said it will make 400 million barrels of oil available from its members’ emergency reserves, which is more than double the 182.7 million barrels that the IEA’s 32 member countries released in 2022 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“This is a major action aiming to alleviate the immediate impacts of the disruption in markets,” IEA executive director Fatih Birol said. “But, to be clear, the most important thing for a return to stable flows of oil and gas is the resumption of transit through the Strait of Hormuz.”

LPG cylinder shortage: Nearly 90% of hotels in Shivamogga to close down operations on March 12

A majority of hotels and restaurants in Shivamogga, in Karnataka, are expected to either close down or scale down the menu from March 12 following a disruption in the supply of commercial gas cylinders in the wake of the conflict in West Asia involving Israel, US, and Iran.

The Shivamogga City Hotel Owners’ Association, which met in Shivamogga on March 11, discussed the issue at length. Many of the members stated that, given the shortage in the supply of cylinders, they could not cook from March 12. Gas agencies have stopped supplying commercial cylinders. As almost all of the hotels are dependent on LPG for cooking, the hoteliers are left with no option but to close down.

Shankaranarayana Holla, president of the association, said, “It is impossible to run hotels without LPG cylinders. Almost 90% of hotels in the city are expected to close down by March 12. Only a few hotels, which have facilities for firewood cooking or electric stoves, can operate with a minimum menu.”

Commercial LPG shortage begins to hit businesses across Rajasthan

Disruption in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders amid the West Asia crisis has begun to hit businesses across Rajasthan, where hotels, restaurants, factories, wedding caterers and tourism establishments have started facing difficulties in running daily operations.

LPG shortage crisis: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah flags commercial LPG disruption in Bengaluru, writes to Union Minister

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri seeking urgent intervention to address the disruption in supply of commercial LPG to hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister said the problem appeared to have arisen following a revised order issued by the Ministry on March 9, which prioritises LPG production for domestic consumers. While the intention behind the order — to ensure uninterrupted supply to households — was appreciated, its implementation had led to an unintended shortage of commercial LPG in Bengaluru, he said.

Gas from new sources will end shortage, say officials

India’s current natural gas supply crunch is likely to be short-lived as the prevailing higher prices right now make imports from distant sources such as Norway and the U.S. economically viable, according to government sources. However, such shipments typically take longer to arrive, meaning the country could face a shortage in the interim, they said.

Requesting anonymity, an official said India’s LPG output has increased by 10% after the government decided to prioritise supplies to households over industry users. On March 5, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) asked all oil refining companies to maximise production, directing that all propane and butane produced, recovered or otherwise available be utilised for LPG output.

Kerala CM urges Centre to subsidise cooking gas

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said the emerging “fuel shock” due to the tensions in West Asia had raised the spectre of crippling shortages of fuel and cooking gas.

In a statement in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (March 11, 2026), Mr Vijayan demanded that the Centre cushion the burden of spiralling cooking gas prices by subsidising the fuel.

Mr. Vijayan said the Centre’s decision to hike cooking gas prices, including for households, would exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis and upend family budgets.

He said the Centre had limited the booking for domestic connections. The scarcity of commercial cooking gas has crippled the food industry.

Hotels and restaurants were shuttering. Commuters and hosteliers are finding food costly and scarce. The fuel crisis had come at an inopportune time for Kerala, given the holy month of Ramzam, he said.

IOC, BPCL, HPCL could see margin pressure amid oil price spike: S&P

S&P Global Ratings on Wednesday said profit margins of oil marketing companies like IOC, BPCL and HPCL, could suffer as they are likely to keep retail prices of petrol and diesel unchanged to curb inflationary pressures.

Oil prices have risen since the start of the U.S.-Iran war with crude rising to over $100 per barrel earlier this week as the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about a fifth of the global crude oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) flows, remained effectively closed. Crude prices have fallen to $88 a barrel on Wednesday.

S&P Global Ratings have recently revised its 2026 average price assumption for Brent crude oil prices by $5 to $65.

The U.S.-based rating agency said India will remain dependent on maritime routes to fulfil its crude needs, but there is some scope for diversification as the country has a history of buying oil from outside Asia, such as from Russia and South America.

Purchases from Russia currently stand at 1.1 million bpd, while that from Venezuela has resumed last month at 142,000 bpd, it added.

Hotels in Puducherry face risk of closure

Hotels in Puducherry are faced with the risk of closure following non-availability of commercial LPG cylinders as alternative measures may not help tide over the situation in this tourist hub, industry insiders said on Wednesday.

A spokesperson of Hotels Association here told PTI that a “helpless situation” has emerged now and hoteliers have started adopting several stringent measures.

He said that most of the hotels have either shifted to cooking food using fire wood or were minimizing the working hours to manage the situation, while also opting for electric cookers.

Incidentally, the price of firewood has shot up by three times, ₹1000 per ‘kundu’ from the usual ₹300. However, firewood can be used for cooking only south Indian food and not Chinese food, he said.

LPG shortage in country; 1 crore people to be unemployed: Kejriwal

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) slammed the Centre for ‘heavy LPG shortage’ affecting people across the country and questioned the Prime Minister’s “support” for Israel and the U.S.

The former Delhi Chief Minister said, “There is a chance that almost 1 crore people would be unemployed because of the power shortage situation emerging,” he said.

“There is a heavy shortage of LPG in the country. The reason behind this is that 90% of the LPG imported in India is from the Strait of Hormuz. Restaurants and hotels are facing shortages. In the next two days, 50% of hotels are on the verge of shutdown, news is coming from Delhi NCR, Bihar,” Mr. Kejriwal said.

Maharashtra Assembly: Congress claims 'severe' shortage of cooking gas, seeks govt clarification

The Congress on Wednesday claimed in the Legislative Assembly that there was a shortage of domestic LPG in Maharashtra, demanding that the government clarify the situation and inform the House about the steps being taken to address it.

Raising the matter, Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said that a “severe” shortage of cooking gas amid the widening conflict in West Asia has created fear and anxiety among households across the State.

While the government talks about development, common people are worried about how they will cook food at home due to gas shortage, he said. Several eateries have remained shut due to a disruption in gas supply, he said.

Referring to the ongoing session, he said the legislature canteen was closed even as the House functioned till around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, and many hotels outside the premises at Nariman Point in south Mumbai were also shut due to the alleged shortage.

He claimed that nearly 30% of hotels in Mumbai and Nagpur have been closed because of the gas shortage, affecting economic activity.

LPG shortage crisis: Mysuru hoteliers ready to pay any price for a cylinder, but none available

The shortage of commercial LPG cylinders is threatening to severely impact the hospitality sector in Kerala, along with other key sectors, with the crisis likely to force many establishments, including catering units and hotels, to shut down within days if the situation continues.

Although CNG is currently available, the situation appears precarious and can disrupt a section of public transport as a significant number of vehicles rely on CNG. If the shortage affects only commercial kitchens now, it is likely to spill over to households soon, as cooking gas stocks are rapidly depleting across the country, including Kerala.

Iran keeps up pressure on oil infrastructure as concerns of global energy crisis grow

Israel and Iran exchanged fire early Wednesday as Tehran kept up its pressure on the region’s oil industry, hitting a ship in the Strait of Hormuz and targeting infrastructure as concerns grew of a global energy crisis.

Iran has effectively stopped shipping traffic through the narrow strait off its coast, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped from the Persian Gulf toward the Indian Ocean.

It has also been targeting oil fields and refineries in Gulf Arab nations as part of a strategy that appeared to be aimed at generating enough global economic pain to pressure the United States and Israel to end their strikes.

LPG crisis: Gas agencies in Bengaluru see surge in bookings, queries amid supply concerns

Amid disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders due to escalating tensions in West Asia, domestic gas agencies in Bengaluru have reported a surge in bookings and enquiries from households concerned about the availability of cooking gas. Dealers, however, said there is adequate stock for domestic consumers, though deliveries may take slightly longer than usual.

Officials from gas agencies said calls and online bookings increased sharply on Tuesday as residents sought confirmation on the availability of cylinders. Ashok Mahadevappa K. of Indian Oil Corporation Limited said agencies are receiving frequent enquiries from customers worried about possible shortages. “We are getting at least 10 calls every hour from people asking whether cylinders are available. Even online bookings have increased significantly,” he said.

Some residents said the uncertainty around commercial LPG supply has triggered concern among households as well. “We generally do not keep an extra cylinder at home, but there was some panic after hearing that commercial LPG supply had been affected. However, this morning we received a message from our gas agency stating that there is adequate supply of domestic cylinders and there is no need to worry,” said Ramesh Jain, a resident of Vasanth Nagar.

LPG crisis: Coimbatore hotels cut service timings, menus

Following a communication from the oil marketing companies on Monday (March 9, 2026) that LPG cylinder supply will be affected because of the U.S.- Israel war on Iran, hotels in Coimbatore district have decided to cut down on service timings and menus. Hotels and retirement communities are exploring alternative sources of fuel.

The Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar Group put out a notice on Monday night informing customers that it would limit its menu to essential items and some items would be available only at specific hours of the day.

K.A. Ramaswamy, president of the Coimbatore District Hoteliers Association, said the oil marketing companies stopped the supply of commercial LPG cylinders from Tuesday (March 10). “We are managing with the cylinders that we have. We have cut down on Chinese items at the live counters, removed parottas from the menu, and restricted dosa and puri items to peak hours,” he said.

The 262 hotels that are members of the association will be able to manage for a couple of days and may start shutting down operations thereafter. “There are thousands of smaller hotels in the district. No one operating in the city limits uses firewood because of inspections and safety norms. They will be the worst-hit,” he said.

Restaurateurs in Hyderabad face concerns over commercial LPG supply; city is home to over 74,000 restaurants

Hyderabad, home to more than 74,000 restaurants with an estimated business turnover exceeding ₹5 lakh crore, is beginning to witness early signs of uncertainty in the supply of commercial Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), raising concerns within the city’s food industry. The figure was shared by the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) in 2024, and industry representatives believe the number of establishments has only increased since then.

Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, restaurant operators say vendors have started indicating possible disruptions in commercial LPG supply, though an immediate shortage has not yet been reported in Hyderabad. The situation remains uneven, with some suppliers continuing deliveries while others have warned of constraints in the coming days.

“We are in contact with our restaurant members and what we are gathering is that a vast majority of restaurant operators rely on LPG. Very few rely on electricity. As of yesterday (March 9, 2026) there were no supply disruptions, but we are now starting to hear people being informed that they may not get LPG supplies,” said Sandeep Balasubramanian, head of NRAI Hyderabad Chapter.

LPG crisis: Restaurants in Bengaluru likely to shut services as LPG supply remains uncertain

After cutting down on their menus, hotels and restaurants across Bengaluru are likely to shut operations from Wednesday, March 11, as uncertainty over the supply of commercial LPG cylinders continues to disrupt the sector. Several establishments, after limiting services on Tuesday, March 10, said they have no option but to halt operations if supplies are not restored soon.

On March 10, many small eateries that serve a large section of the city’s daily workforce put up boards reading “Only tea and coffee available” while others reduced their menus. Hoteliers said items such as vada and dosa were among the first to be cut because they require continuous heat even when food is not actively being prepared, leading to higher gas consumption.
