The resolution seeking the removal of Om Birla as Speaker was on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) defeated in Lok Sabha by a voice vote. Amid protests and sloganeering by the opposition seeking an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jagdambika Pal, who was in the chair, announced that the no-confidence motion was defeated.

Mr. Pal urged the opposition to take their seats so that he could put the motion to a vote. But as the protests continued, he sought the vote of the House and the resolution was rejected by a voice vote, following which he adjourned the House for the day.

Amit Shah said that Rahul Gandhi has to travel to different places for the party’s purposes and publicity, but he skipped the President’s speech, the Budget, and Article 370. During key parliamentary sessions, he travels abroad and then says he is not allowed to speak,” the Home Minister said.

“In 17th LS, Rahul Gandhi’s attendance was 51%, average was 66%; in 16th LS, his attendance was 52%, average was 80%, Mr. Shah says. The Opposition broke into a protest, shouting slogans of Maafi maango, asking the Home Minister to apologise.

Several Opposition leaders, speaking during the debate on Tuesday (March 10, 2026), complained of the post of Deputy Speaker lying vacant, microphones being switched off, Opposition members being disallowed to speak, and mass suspensions, among other major issues.
