Iran’s Supreme Leader urges regional allies to denounce U.S. military bases

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei asked the countries of the region to clarify their stance regarding the aggressors against Iran.

“The countries of the region must clarify their stance regarding the aggressors against our dear homeland and the killers of our people. I recommend that they shut down those bases as soon as possible, for they must surely have realised by now that America’s claim of establishing security and peace has been nothing but a lie,” said the Iran’s new Supreme Leader.

“The enemy has gradually established bases in some neighbouring countries over the years. In the recent offensive, some of those military bases were put to use, which naturally we have targeted with attacks—precisely as we had issued explicit warnings, and without making any encroachment on those countries themselves—solely striking those bases,” he added.

“We will exact reparations from the enemy, and if it refuses, we will seize from its assets as much as we deem necessary; and if that too proves impossible, we will destroy an equivalent portion of its assets,” he warned.

Israel Army says Hezbollah fired 200 rockets on March 11

The Israeli military said on Thursday (March 12, 2026) that Hezbollah had fired around 200 rockets at Israel the night before, in what it described as the Lebanese armed group’s “biggest barrage” since the war began.

“Last night, Hezbollah timed a simultaneous attack with Iran, firing rockets and drones at towns and communities across Israel. The numbers (are) about approximately 200 rockets and approximately 20 UAVs (drones) and combine those with ballistic missiles that were being fired from Iran at the same time,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani told journalists in a briefing.

“This was Hezbollah’s biggest barrage” since the start of the war, he said, but added, “we had a good aerial defence and rapid response, resulting in minimal casualties, only two or three direct hits... and a few civilians that were lightly injured”.

There also has been speculation that the United States could target Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf, Iran’s main oil terminal.

Outdated intel likely led U.S. to carry out deadly strike on Iranian elementary school

Outdated intelligence likely led to the United States carrying out a deadly missile strike on an elementary school in Iran that killed over 165 people, many of them children, in the opening hours of the conflict, according to a U.S. official and a second person briefed on findings of a preliminary U.S military investigation into the incident.

The bombing of the school and its casualties involving children has become a focal point of the war, and if ultimately confirmed to be at the hands of the U.S., would also stand among the highest civilian casualty events caused by the American military operations in the last two decades.

President Donald Trump initially blamed Iran for the attack, later said he wasn’t certain who was to blame, and then said he would accept the results of the Pentagon’s investigation. The issue took on added urgency on Wednesday after the New York Times first reported that a preliminary investigation found that the U.S. was responsible.

U.S. Central Command relied on target coordinates for the strike using outdated data provided by the Defense Intelligence Agency, according to the person familiar with the preliminary finding.

The agency did not respond to a request for comment.

Oil tops $100 as Iran attacks offset IEA stockpile release

Oil soared above $100 and stocks sank on Thursday as Iran’s fresh attempts to hit supplies in West Asia and threats to bring down the global economy overshadowed a record release of strategic crude by the International Energy Agency.

The IEA said on Wednesday that its members had agreed to unlock 400 million barrels of oil from their reserves -- their largest release ever.

But the move was unable to overcome fears about the choking of energy supplies from the Middle East, with the Strait of Hormuz -- through which a fifth of global crude passes -- effectively shut down.

Damage to historical sites in Iran raises alarm about war's impact on protected places

U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran have damaged at least four cultural and historical sites, including palaces and an ancient mosque, raising alarms about the impact of the widening war on protected landmarks that are important to Iranian identity and world history.

The speed and extent of the damage have so concerned Iran and Lebanon that they sent a request to the United Nations’ cultural agency, UNESCO, this week to add more sites to its enhanced protection list.

UNESCO confirmed that it has verified damage to the lavish Qajar-era Golestan Palace in Tehran as well as the 17th century Chehel Sotoun palace and the Masjed-e Jame, the country’s oldest Friday mosque, both in Isfahan. There also was verified damage at buildings close to the Khorramabad Valley, which includes five prehistoric caves and one rock shelter providing evidence of human occupation dating to 63,000 B.C.

Fear, boredom for Philippine sailors stuck in Hormuz strait

Filipino sailor George Miranda was racing to help a stricken vessel aboard the tugboat Mussafah 2 when he last spoke to his wife and young daughter.

The 46-year-old, whose small ship was struck by a pair of missiles this week in the Strait of Hormuz, is the only seafarer from the Philippines known to be missing in the West Asian war, the government says.

But more than 6,000 others from the country that supplies a quarter of the world’s sailors are still working in the conflict zone and “surrounding areas”, many waiting for the green light to pass through the now-deadly shipping lane.

Japan's Nikkei falls as oil climbs on prolonged West Asia conflict

Japan’s Nikkei share average dropped on Thursday (March 12, 2026) as global oil prices resumed their climb, while ‌concerns grew that the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran could drag on.

The Nikkei was down 1.3% at 54,323.47, as of 0025 GMT, and the broader Topix slipped ‌1.13% to 3,656.85.

Oil prices settled up nearly 5% overnight as fresh attacks on ‌ships in the Strait of Hormuz worsened supply disruption fears, and analysts said the International Energy Agency’s proposal for ‌a record release of oil reserves is inadequate to ease those worries.

Soon after a ship bound for India was hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday (March 11, 2026), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it “deplores” such attacks and stated that the intensity of strikes on commercial shipping in the region “seems to be increasing”.

‘Targeting mistake’ led to U.S. missile strike on Iranian school: report

The United States was responsible for a Tomahawk missile strike on an Iranian school because of a targeting mistake, The New York Times reported on Wednesday (March 11, 2026).

The newspaper, citing U.S. officials, said the investigation into the February 28 strike was ongoing but preliminary findings were that the United States was responsible.

The U.S. military was conducting strikes on an adjacent Iranian base of which the school building was formerly a part and target coordinates were set using outdated data, it said.

Oil shock from Iran war prompts countries to open strategic reserves

A widening war in Iran has halted oil tankers, made targets of refineries and spooked investors worried about the cascading impact of spiking energy prices.

In response, the International Energy Agency agreed on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) to release the largest volume of emergency oil reserves in its history, with the Paris-based organisation pledging to make 400 million barrels of oil available from its member nations’ stockpiles.

The announcement marked a shift in momentum in government response to the war upending the flow of oil, with other global leaders previously indicating reluctance to tap into stockpiles.

Iran threatens prolonged war as Trump says it is near defeat

Iran warned it could wage a prolonged war with the United States and Israel that would “destroy” the world economy, even as U.S. President Donald Trump said late on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) the Islamic republic was facing imminent defeat.

Retaliatory Iranian missile strikes and drone attacks have brought shipping through the strait almost to a halt, forcing governments to scramble to contain the fallout, while Mr. Trump said Iran was “pretty much at the end of the line.”

He said Iran’s Navy and Air Force had been destroyed, that it was close to running out of missiles and that U.S. forces could knock out the electricity supply “within one hour” -- leaving the country with a reconstruction that could take a generation.
