A 25-year-old man was arrested by Arakkonam Town police in Ranipet on Sunday for reportedly assaulting a duty police head constable at Government Taluk Hospital over an argument in delay in providing treatment.

Police said the arrested person was identified as Mohammed Ismail, 25, a resident of Arakkonam. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim S. Kumar, 35, a native of Tiruvannamalai, was working as a head constable at Arakkonam Town police for the past few months.

As part of routine shift, Kumar was assigned duty at Government Taluk Hospital in the town when the suspect Ismail came to the hospital for a medical checkup for his friend Riaz, 24.

Police said that Ismail got agitated as hospital authorities allegedly made delay in attending to his friend. Ismail got into an argument with the hospital staff. Head constable Kumar, who was in plain clothes, tried to intervene when Ismail reportedly hit him in the face.

Police said constable Kumar suffered injuries on his nose. He was admitted to the hospital. On being informed, Arakkonam Town police rushed to the spot and nabbed the suspect. A case was registered. A probe is under way.
