Assam election: Almost 50% voters in Assam are women

Almost 50% of 2.5 crore voters in Assam are women, the State’s Chief Electoral Officer, Anurag Goel, said on Monday (March 16, 2026).

Filing of nominations for the single phase election on April 9 began on Monday (March 16, 2026) and will continue until March 23, Mr. Goel said.

Mr. Goel told journalists that 1.64 lakh voters were added to the 2.49 crore electors named in the final list of voters published on February 10. “We will continue to update the list until the last day of filing of nomination papers,” he said.

Of the 2,50,21,413 voters registered so far, 1,25,04,501 are women, accounting for 49.97%. The list has 321 third gender voters.

According to the Election Commission of India (EC), 6,28,093 voters in Assam are first-timers in the 18-19 years age group, while 2,482 voters are aged 100 years or more.

The EC has set up 31,486 polling stations across the State for the elections to the 126-member Assembly. Of these, 3,716 stations will be managed by women, and 23 by persons with disabilities, while 126 have been designated as model polling stations.

The Mankachar constituency in western Assam, bordering Bangladesh, has the highest number of polling stations at 402, while Dotoma, also in western Assam, has the lowest (146).

The Dalgaon constituency in north-central Assam has the most voters (3,17,110), while Amri in central Assam has the fewest with 1,00,494 voters.

Some 200 companies of security forces will be deployed across the State to ensure smooth and peaceful elections, Mr. Goel said. Additional CCTV cameras would be installed at each of the State’s 134 check posts, the Chief Electoral Officer said.
